First home league win secured with a late winner against Komárno
The last match of Niké Liga Round 5 saw the Šošoni leave it late against Komárno. All three goals came after the halftime break, with the visitors first scoring an own goal before finding an equaliser of their own. The decisive moment arrived in the closing stages with Sandro Narimanidze's header to secure Žilina’s first home league victory of the season.
The Šošoni will look to build on the three points away at Trnava next weekend. Before that, our Slovnaft Cup campaign gets underway.
Head coach Vladimír Veselý made two changes to the side that won in Banská Bystrica, bringing Fabian Bzdyl into midfield and deploying Samo Ďatko as a wing-back in the starting XI.
The Šošoni dominated possession from the start but struggled to break down Komárno’s compact defence despite a series of corners and crosses. The best first-half chances fell to Ďatko, who was twice denied, while Dani Homet and Krisztián Bari also threatened. The visitors survived another big scare early in the second half when Homet and Fero Kóša combined, only for Komárno defenders to clear the danger off the line. Marko Roginić then rattled the crossbar shortly after coming on. The breakthrough finally arrived in the 67th minute. Timotej Hranica delivered a dangerous cross and, under pressure from Patrik Iľko, a Komárno defender turned the ball into his own net for 1:0. The lead lasted just four minutes as Bernát levelled for the visitors. With the match heading towards a draw, Žilina found the winner from a set piece. Bari’s delivery was headed home by Sandro Narimanidze, securing a 2:1 victory and the Šošoni’s first home league win of the season.
Next up is a trip to Trnava in the Niké Liga on Sunday, while the yellow-and-greens will first begin their Slovnaft Cup campaign away to Divina on Wednesday.
