Seven-goal thriller goes the Šošoni’s way at Bystrica

Seven-goal thriller goes the Šošoni’s way at Bystrica

Two teams in need of a spark, both turning to new faces in the dugout. This time, it was Žilina who came out on top. In his first match in charge, coach Vlado Veselý saw the Šošoni take control early and build a two-goal lead before the break. Two more goals followed in the second half as Žilina secured victory in the Central Slovakia derby, despite a late push from the home side.

The yellowgreens claimed another away win in the league, eventually coming out on top 4:3 in a seven-goal thriller at Štiavničky. Now it is time to back it up at the Stadium under the Dubeň hill. Komárno are next up, and we invite you to join us as the Šošoni look to build on their derby success. Tickets are on sale now.

Head coach Vladimír Veselý surprised with a few selection decisions in his first game in charge, handing Dani Homet his first start and deploying Patrik Baleja on the wing. The Šošoni made a lively start and took the lead in the 15th minute. After a pass from Fero Kóša, Krisztián Bari cut inside and calmly finished to make it 0:1. Ten minutes later, the same duo combined again, this time with Kóša curling a superb effort into the bottom corner from outside the box for 0:2. Žilina could have added more before the break, with Bari denied in a one-on-one, while Ján Minárik produced a crucial goal-line clearance to preserve the two-goal cushion.

The visitors struck again just three minutes after the restart. Kóša set up Dani Homet with a clever backheel, and the Spaniard finished confidently for 0:3. The fourth goal arrived in the 79th minute when Michal Faško tapped into an empty net after an unselfish assist from Andrea Florea. Before that, Banská Bystrica had pulled one back through Roland Szánthó from the penalty spot. The hosts then scored twice more through Róbert Polievka and another stunning Szánthó free-kick in stoppage time, but the comeback came too late. Despite a nervous finish, the Šošoni left Štiavničky with all three points after an entertaining 4:3 victory.

Next up is a return to the Stadium under the Dubeň hill, where Žilina host Komárno next Sunday at 19:00. Tickets are on sale now.

Post-match reactions

“I’m pleased with the winning start. Every coach wants their debut to end with three points. At the same time, the way we finished the match is something we need to improve. We gifted the hosts all three of their goals through avoidable mistakes, and those details can cost you points. There were also plenty of positives. I liked the energy of the team, the mentality before the game and the quality of the goals we scored. Now our full focus is on Komárno. We want to build on this result and finally add a home win to our away victories.”
Vladimír Veselý, head coach MŠK Žilina
“I’m disappointed with the result of my debut. We knew where Žilina were dangerous, but they still punished us in those areas. We fought our way back into the game and created chances of our own, yet the turning point came too late. The positives are the goals we scored and some aspects of our performance, which we now need to build on.”
Daniel Valach, head coach MFK Dukla Banská Bystrica
“The win is the main positive, but we made too many unforced errors and gifted the hosts opportunities to score. That’s something we have to improve. Scoring four goals is great for the attack, but we could have added more. Personally, I didn’t feel at my best today despite the numbers. The attacking players worked really well together, though. My favourite moment was the backheel assist for Dani Homet’s goal, and I’m glad it ended up in the net. Hopefully, we can follow up this victory with another one at the Stadium under the Dubeň hill against Komárno, with the support of our fans.”
František Kóša, forward MŠK Žilina
